Stats

Happy New Year, everyone! Time for the most fun Stats post of the year, with December’s wacky results and a look back at both 2017 and my all-time listening habits, courtesy of Last.fm.

Keep in mind these are songs I have listened to only on a Mac, iPad, iPhone that has been connected to Last.fm. So in reality the high-end artists usually have a lot more total listens that came in the car. And I’m not always confident Last.fm pulls in everything I listen to on a connected device. But these do give you a general picture of what I listen to, month-to-month.

December 2017

  • Bing Crosby – 87
  • Frank Sinatra – 79
  • The War on Drugs – 37
  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – 35
  • Traditional – 34

Always good when “Traditional” makes the list.

2017

  • The War on Drugs – 597
  • Ryan Adams – 546
  • Frightened Rabbit – 243
  • The Beatles – 216
  • Japandroids – 200
  • Pearl Jam – 177
  • Waxahatchee – 148
  • The National – 138
  • Middle Kids – 129
  • Prince – 126

Each year when I review my list I’m surprised by a couple results. I feel like I don’t listen to Pearl Jam that much any more, but clearly I do. And surprised the Beatles are so high, too.

All Time

  • Frightened Rabbit – 3026
  • Pearl Jam – 2738
  • The War on Drugs – 1956
  • Ryan Adams – 1928
  • The Beatles – 1890
  • The Clash – 1708
  • Radiohead – 1504
  • Crowded House – 1239
  • The White Stripes – 1150
  • The Hold Steady – 925

These results go back to February 14, 2005. Interesting how the list is dominated by artists I came to love in the age of streaming music, when it is easier to play an artist’s entire catalog. Ryan Adams is a perfect example. I know I only had 3–4 of his songs in my iTunes catalog before I really dove into his music three years ago. Spotify has allowed me to stream the hell of out his deep catalog so he’s climbed the list quickly.
