Friday Playlist
As I begin putting this playlist together Thursday evening, I’m not really sure where it is going. There are several older songs in the queue and I’m trying to figure out which newer ones to pull in. Let’s take a musical journey together and see where we land!
“From The Night” – The Prize
Hell yes! Some very solid power-pop-punk from Australia.
“Simply Obsessed” – Field Medic
If you combined Trace Mountains and Wild Pink, but turned them into jangle pop, the result would probably sound like this.
“Drunk Surfer” – Westside Cowboy
This song sounds a little more Manchester than their first single I shared a few weeks back. It also has a solid, mid-aughts sound. It isn’t too different from what bands like Maximo Park, Kasabian, etc were doing back then.
“Cry Cry Cry” – King Princess
Two straight weeks with a KP song, each of them with very different tones.
“The Subway” – Chappell Roan
I missed the whole Chappell Roan moment a couple years back. I knew of her pushback against the pressures and expectations placed on artists, but didn’t know a thing about her music. Then on July 4, while listening to The Bridge’s Top 909 songs of the century, I was completely blown away when I heard “Pink Pony Club” for the first time. What a completely amazing song! It was #3 on that list, thanks to a nice local artist bump for the southern Missouri native. This is her latest single. It is very nice, but nowhere near as good as “PPC.” She does have a wonderful voice, though.
“Bleed Together” – Soundgarden
I love it when this song pops up. The most Pearl Jam-y song Soundgarden ever recorded. I’m still not convinced it wasn’t recorded during the Temple of the Dog sessions with the PJ guys behind Chris Cornell. If they had released it a few years earlier – it appeared on their 1997 compilation A-Sides – it might have been a monster hit.
“Clampdown” – The Clash
Joe Strummer would have turned 73 yesterday. Raise a toast…
“New York Groove” – HELLO
It is US Open time! This track is being used in some of the ads for the tournament this year.
“Summer Song” – Joe Satriani
Running out of weeks to play these songs.
“Wheel In The Sky” – Journey
I had something else lined up for this week’s vid. But I spent a lot of Thursday evening watching random stuff on YouTube. One for Journey’s “Stone In Love” came up and I sent it to a brother in music, E-Bro, so we could laugh about it. He sent this one back, among others. We were both floored by the fashion, especially guitarist Neil Schon’s look. And is it just me, OR DOES HE LOOK A LOT LIKE 1979 PRINCE??? Wild, wild stuff. Also a pretty badass song that has held up well.
