Friday Playlist

“Summer Soft” – Stevie Wonder
You find It’s October, and she’s gone…

“Dipped” – HighSchool
Earlier this year Aussie band CIVIC released a song called “Chrome Dipped.” Now we have another Aussie band, which does not sound very Aussie at all, with a similarly named track.

“Light Sleeper” – Home Front
One of my top 5–10 post-punk bands making music right now.

“DCWDTTY” – Bartees Strange
Strange takes some post-punk, mixes it with some Tunde Adebimpe-sounding vocals, and turns it into an ode to his hometown of Washington, DC.

“Little Black Dress” – Francis of Delirium
Terrific pop song that will probably get ignored. Corporate radio sucks. Also a reminder to put a pin in Luxembourg on your map of countries included in this series.

“Everything Is Coming Up Roses” – World News
For the most part, this is a Proper Fall Music song, although the guitar solo rips it out of the cozy realm for about 30 seconds.

“Modern Age” – Dancehall
This band reminds me, sonically, of Bombay Bicycle Club a bit.

“Fall Away” – Good Flying Birds
Hey, these kids are from Indy! This song began as a voice memo, sent from one member of the group to another, who banged out the basic track in his parents’ basement up in Carmel. It doesn’t get more 21st Century than that. This track has a fuzzy, blog rock era vibe.

“I’d Run Away” – The Jayhawks
I’m not saying this to be mean, but The Jayhawks had one of the biggest gaps between how great they sounded and how…not great they looked of any band ever. Great fucking song from a great fucking album, but watching this I was reminded why I don’t think I watched their videos very often.
