Friday Playlist
We are going to start out heavy but quickly fall into a mood. Seems appropriate for Easter weekend.
“The House of I” – The Afghan Whigs
The Whigs released a couple new covers earlier this year. Now brand new original music. They still sound great.
“It’s A Beautiful Life” – Francis of Delirium
Glad our only Luxembourg act has some staying power.
“Javelin” – Kevin Morby
As promised two weeks ago, the second excellent new track from one of KC’s finest.
“I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” – Thundercat
The new Thundercat album is out today; the early reviews were terrific. That makes sense, as every preview single I’ve heard has been good-to-great.
“Heaven Of Love” – The Reds, Pinks, and Purples
Man, Glenn Donaldson sounds like he’s going through some stuff on this track. Thankfully he’s turning that into really good music.
“If You Change” – Widowspeak
I haven’t used the Country Or Not moniker in a long time. It applies to the next two songs, although this one feels more early Nineties REM than country.
“Wreck” Brown Horse
A second amazing song from these Brits who sound like southern Americans.
“Easter” – Strand of Oaks
Happy Easter to all!
“Allentown” – Billy Joel
Often when I hear a song that has been included in the RFTS series, I’ll go read that post to remind myself what I wrote about it. That was the case this week after hearing “Allentown,” and was surprised that there was no video attached to the post. It looks like I didn’t start embedding them until the seventh RFTS entry. So I ran over to YouTube, found the “Allentown” vid, and copied it into the original post. [1]
Then I watched it.
Wow. It really is something… Whatever it is I’m not sure it jibbed with Joel’s gritty look at how the Rust Belt was falling apart in the Eighties.
Apparently there was some controversy – shocking! – about it, particularly about the mostly nude men in the showers. Those scenes were stripped from the video played on MTV. I’m not sure the dancer in briefs juggling fire reflected life in industrial Pennsylvania very well, either.
I imagine I will correct the other entries eventually, too. ↩
