Friday Playlist

“Chance Encounters” – The Menzingers
These guys almost always hit. I heard this for the first time about four minutes after I posted last week’s playlist.

“Like A Chump” – Mute Swan
This presents as a mid-point between shoegaze and early Madchester music.

“I Want To Remember Everything” – knitting
This also might have a hint of shoegaze to it, but also sounds very much like turn-of-the-millennium, MusicChoice-type rock. When there was still a hint of brooding grunge but music was also opening up to where indie rock would take land.

“Blue” – Yaya Bey
It’s taken me way too long to share this wonderful track, and for that I apologize. I love that Stereogum has started describing artists like Bey as “alt-R&B.”

“No Driver” – Widowspeak
Hot damn, this makes two fantastic tracks from Widowspeak this year!

“Heaven’s Night” – Holy Motors
One of those bands so new it is tough to find info about them. They fit right next to Widowspeak in current bands that owe a certain debt to Mazzy Star.

“Criminal Kissing” – IAN SWEET
A fun song about making bad decisions.

“Defeat” – Flock of Dimes
Not sure why or how I missed this song last year. Jenn Wasner can do no wrong.

“Head Rolls Off” – Frightened Rabbit
Make tiny changes. RIP, Scott.
