Friday Playlist

By the time most of you get to this post, I will be somewhere on I–65 between Indianapolis and Chicago. This playlist (mostly) celebrates the reason for my journey.

“Your Little Hoodrat Friend” – The Hold Steady
Tomorrow two of my brothers-in-music and I will be watching THS in Chicago. Can’t wait. “She’s been calling me again…”

“Drowning Machine” – Liquid Mike
Maybe not directly THS influenced, but I think you can say they occupy a similar general space in the modern rock world.

“Get To Choose” – Dirt Buyer
This song was released back in November but I’m just hearing it now, for some reason. Not Grade A by any measure, but generally upbeat and rocky, so fits this week’s broad theme.

“Round Of Applause At The End Of The World” – Wild Pink
I’ve been a Wild Pink fan for a while now. I love the direction John Ross is taking his band. You know who else sang about Kennedy Assassinations? The Hold Steady, that’s who.

“I Didn’t Mean To Change My Mind” – Prism Shores
Equal parts jangle and power pop.

“Sulk” – Radiohead
Nothing to do with this weekend, this song just fucking rocks. “You bite through the big wall, the big wall bites back…”

“Hold Steady” – Sludgeworth
Not a terrible song, but obviously included because of the title alone.

“Days Move Slow” – Bully
Tomorrow’s show has three opening bands. Not sure how many of them we’ll get to see, but I’m hoping to catch at least a little of Bully’s set.

“Carry The Zero” – Built To Spill
I wouldn’t mind catching BTS, either.

“That Summer Feeling” – Jonathan Richman
One of the b-i-m’s I will be hanging with this weekend is a big JR fan. Seems appropriate to play this today.

“Stuck Between Stations” – The Hold Steady
Their greatest song, arguably the greatest American rock song of the 21st Century. “He likes the warm feeling but he’s tired of all the dehydration…”
