Fitness Update
We’re a week into the fourth quarter of the year[1] and I bet a few of you are annoyed with me for not sharing my latest fitness update. My bad. Here it is.
Q3 was my best of the year so far. Which makes sense as it was the warmest, least stormy stretch of 2025 so the pool was always available, even if I had to kick the heater on in the morning to get it warmed up a bit over the past month.[2]
I worked out – either strength training, cardio, swimming, or taking a walk longer than 30 minutes – 78 of 92 days, or a cool 85% of days. By comparison, I worked out 73% of days in Q1, 74% of days in Q2, so a big bump up. And that was losing a day when we moved C into her dorm. A little perturbed with myself for being lazy two other days in August and not stretching out a really long consecutive days streak. As it stands, I’ve had two streaks of 11 straight days breaking a sweat.
Again, these are not to brag but to motivate. I’m super lucky that my schedule allows the opportunity to work out every day, my gym is literally a two minute walk from my front door, and we have a pool.[3] I know most of you have very different time constraints. Find 20–30 minutes in your day and do something to get your heart rate up, it’ll be good for you.
The irony of my efforts is that my weight simply does not change. I’m still in the same 3–5 pound range every time I weigh myself. I could lose 5–10 pounds, but as a man I am fortunate those extra ones are hidden until I take my shirt off at the pool. I suppose that’s a downside of being home all day. Anytime I need a snack, one is available, so my caloric intake generally fluctuates with my workout schedule. Take a day off, I don’t get hungry in the afternoon. Work out hard three straight days, I’m probably adding another half meal sometime in the afternoon or evening.
- I hope you raised four fingers and walked from one side of your house to the other sometime last Tuesday. ↩
- I need the water at least 85° to get started. I’m kind of a wuss about chilly water. ↩
- We are currently getting quotes to finish part of our basement as a workout room. There is a complication so it may not happen, but if we are able to move forward that will eliminate my excuses on the days the windchill is below zero. ↩
