Friday Playlist
“October” – The Helio Sequence
We’ve finally had a couple of cool days and chilly mornings, although temps will creep back up closer to 80 next week. Close enough for me to bust out this fall classic, at least classic to me.
“Break The Girl” – Florence Road
Wonderful, bouncy track by some young ladies from Wicklow, Ireland.
“Automatic” – Spiritual Cramp
In their write up about this song, Stereogum compared this band to early ‘00s’ bands like the Killers or TV On The Radio. I hear a ton of Editors in it, who were from about the same time but a different scene.
“Spirit Of Your Friend” – Doves
Doves have a greatest hits collection coming out next month. Like all such releases, there has to be a new or lost track (or both!). This is the lost track, recorded back in 2005. I wouldn’t say it stands up with their best, but it is a Doves song, so still worth sharing.
“the one” – Gabriel Jacoby
What a fantastic, joyful song! You can draw a lot of straight lines from this song to many musical giants. D’Angelo. Prince. Sly Stone.
“Rusty Mountain” – Neko Case
I believe I’ve said this before, but Neko is an American treasure.
“Samson” – Public Circuit
I refuse to believe this is a new song by a modern band. In fact, I will insist, this track was made for a movie in the mid–80s that was never released. It sounds EXACTLY like a song that could have been in Fletch or Real Genius or any of a dozen other movies that were in high rotation on cable in the late Eighties and early Nineties. I will not accept any evidence to the contrary.
“Lie In The Fire Again” – The Berries
The Berries’ album is filled with warm, soaring jams like this. If I still listened to albums very much, I probably would have listened to it a million times over the last month. Good fall music album, too.
“Deeper Water” – Paul Kelly
The first time I heard this song was five or so years ago, when a then five-year-old live version Kelly recorded with Neil Finn hit my feed. I’d never tried to find the original until this week. I prefer the Finn collab, because it’s Neal after all. But this one is nearly as good. I love artists that can retain their native accents while singing like Kelly.
