Friday Playlist
I realized at about 10:35 Thursday evening that because I have an appointment Friday morning, if I didn’t put this together right away, I might not get it posted until nearly lunch time Friday. Let’s see if I can keep my eyes open long enough to crank out something worthy of your attentions.
“Stupid Bitches” – Grace Ives
This seems like the perfect song for the moment. (Spotify is fighting me to put this one in Thursday night. Hopefully Friday morning it is working. Apple seems to have no trouble with it.)
“Invisible Ink” – King Tuff
Another great new track from KT.
“Your Eyes” – White Fence
Let’s keep the good grooves going. Some 1970s Bowie in this one? Or, rather, it sounds like an act from the Seventies that was influenced by Bowie.
“Arrow” – Lala Lala
While this artist got her start in Chicago, it really was inevitable that she would move to LA with a name like that. I like the ominous tone of the music and how her vocals offset that feeling.
“Celluloid” – GUM
When I first came across this song, I thought it was GUV, thus was very surprised when it sounded like a cross between Bloc Party and TV On The Radio.
“In The Middle Of It” – Hiss Golden Messenger
As always, HGM provides the warm weather vibes.
“Future Spring” – Gladie
Here’s our latest entry in the Straight From The Nineties sounding acts.
“Phantasms Of The Living” – Mute Swan featuring Sonoda
Some very solid, melodic shoegaze. I’m hearing early 2000s, something I would have caught on Music Choice back in the day, searched for on a file sharing service, then burned to a CD I listened to in my car and at work. Explain all that to your kids!
“Cities In Dust” – Siouxsie and the Banshees
Not their very best, but still a borderline classic that I heard this week for the first time in ages.
“American Obituary” – U2
After Billy Bragg and Bruce Springsteen chimed in about Trump’s War on Americans, it was only a matter of time before U2 did. As you would expect, the lyrics here are clunky and forced. I have to say, though, this is the coolest sounding U2 song, musically, to my ears in decades. Granted I’ve largely tuned them out for 20-ish years. And I heard another song from their new EP that I though was decent. Perhaps we’ll visit that one down the road.
