Weekend Notes
This will be a brief(ish?) entry as we had a rather lazy weekend and I need to get outside and push the snow that fell overnight off the driveway. It looks like close to 2” from inside.[1] CHS is delayed for two hours so L gets a longer weekend than she already had. Tomorrow will be in the 50s and we’ll be well into the 70s later this week with thunderstorms. March in the Midwest!
Family Time
Both college girls came home for the weekend, each getting here Friday evening. We hadn’t seen M since the first week of January. It was mostly a chance for them to chill. We took all three out for a nice dinner on Saturday, going to a semi-fancy Italian place we had never been to. That was good.
M’s co-op seems to be going well. She showed us a project she has worked on the past few weeks, a 70+ page proposal for a big government contract. It’s for a piece of a $700 million pool of funding that would set the firm up pretty nicely for the next few years. Hopefully there aren’t any typos! I told her she should ask for a bonus if they get the contract.
As I said, L had a long weekend. Saturday was the annual fundraising event at CHS and they always kick the kids out on Friday to prep the campus. I think she was bored. Friday she cleaned her bedroom and bathroom, then her car. M and S were so impressed with her work they paid her to clean their cars on Saturday. Then she did her bi-weekly job cleaning for her grandparents on Sunday. One of the hostesses at the restaurant we went to Saturday is a friend of hers, and L put in an application while we were there. Girl likes to stack up that money!
Jayhawk Talk
I had Saturday’s game in Tucson chalked up as a loss the moment the schedule came out. That was without knowing Arizona would clearly be the best team in the conference this year. And before KU gave the Wildcats their first loss of the season last month. Those factors just made it more of a lock.
So I wasn’t really surprised with Arizona smacked a 15–0 run, or whatever it was, on KU early. We had to leave for dinner before the game was over andI told both of my in-game text threads that I bet KU would make a run just before we left to get my hopes up and annoy me that we got an early reservation, and then fall apart.
I’m a genius! Big start to the second half made it a two-point game. That just pissed Arizona off. When we sat down to our table I checked the score and saw UA was up by 23. Glad I missed it.
In road games against good teams this year, KU has looked like crap more often than not. With the exception of the game at Texas Tech, they were blown out in the second half in each one. And Tech was up 10 and seemed to be pulling away before KU stole that game.
The Jayhawks can beat any team in the country. The issue is it seems like they can only beat good teams in Lawrence. Which is a problem since they only have one more game in Allen Fieldhouse this year.
HS Hoops
Saturday was state title day in Indiana.
The team that beat us two weeks ago finally faded in the fourth quarter. After coming from behind in the final eight minutes two straight weeks, RHS entered the fourth quarter tied Saturday, but lost by eight in the 3A title game. Apparently their best player, who scored 14 on us and 8 last Saturday in the closing periods, had some kind of leg injury, possible cramping, that took her out of the game.
In the 4A game, NHS, who crushed us in November, had a five point lead over undefeated CG going into the fourth quarter. CG was undefeated for a reason, though, and came back to win by three. We lost to them by 13 in January. Those were, by far, the two best teams we played this season. NHS won 3A last year and had finished as runners up in 3A the year before, earning them a bump up to 4A. What a run for the groups of seniors that anchored that team.
- After shoveling, it was closer to 3” than 2”. Heavy, wet snow that had also melted and re-frozen at surface level. ↩
