Friday Playlist

Unlike last week, I had almost too much music to pick from today. Let’s see how well I do editing.

(One track, marked with ***, is not available in Spotify and I’m too lazy to adjust. Another vote for Apple Music…)

“Summer Begins” – The Proctors
Let’s go!

“The Weak” – Iceage
This is what The Strokes wanted to sound like but never did. The Strokes were never cool enough to have a deranged flute solo, either.

“Price Of It All” – Jorja Smith
I can’t find where any of the music sites I follow wrote about this, so I’m really not sure where I came across it. I sure am glad that I did, though.

“Call It In” – Editors
The first new music from Editors in four years. Worth the wait.

“No Lock, No Prayer” – Snarls
These Ohio kids came out of nowhere to earn my second favorite song of 2020 ranking. They were all barely 20 then. You’re hearing some maturity on this track. It also sounds very turn-of-the-millennium-y.

“Trapeze Baby” – The Laughing Chimes***
I finally get to play their music in a season that matches their sound!

“Mulberry” – Body Type
Purple Rain reference. Joyous guitar pop. Australian band. What’s not to like?

“Believe In You” – Jacuzzi Fire
I think it is mostly the drums, but this sounds exactly like dozens of bands I heard opening for bigger groups in places like The Bottleneck and The Hurricane in the mid–90s.

“Prophecy At 1420 Mhz” – Boards of Canada
According to Wikipedia the title of this “…is a reference to the frequency of the 21-centimeter line, commonly associated with the search for extraterrestrial life and the Wow! signal.” OK then. I was thinking kilohertz, not megahertz, so assumed it was about Bible prophecy AM stations. Cool ass song, though.

“Summer Breeze” – The Isley Brothers
Don’t worry, Seals & Crofts will get some love before the summer is over.
