Friday Playlist

Hopefully this playlist comes together ok. I imagine I’ll schedule this to post on the normal Friday morning time slot. By then we will have left town about 18 hours earlier for a weekend in Colorado. I started putting this together Monday afternoon. Let’s see how it turned out!

“Artificial Sunlight” – Les Big Byrd
Nothing artificial about the light we’ve been having lately. Genuinely one of the greatest Junes I can recall, weather-wise. Which makes me nervous for what July has in store for us.

“Lovesick” – Wishy
These Indianapolis kids join the wave of bands who have adopted the retro Nineties sound. They do it pretty well, too.

“See Out Loud” – Interpol
Last week I shared an Interpol song I said sounded like nothing they had done before. This, on the other hand, sounds exactly like what you expect an Interpol song to sound like.

“If You Should Turn Away” – Weird Nightmare
Holy Summerteeth! This owes a lot like the title track off Wilco’s classic album.[1] I mean those “ahhh, ahhhhs” are lifted straight from it!

“Self Sabotage” – Eddy Current Suppression Ring
Apple Music Only
This band was once a big part of the underground rock scene in Melbourne. However, they had only released one album since 2009. That changed a few weeks when they dropped a surprise album. This is exactly what you expect when you hear the term “Australian Underground Rock.”

“Cycle” – Pye Corner Audio & Andy Bell
I’m not sure where to slot this track in, genre-wise. Certainly some synth and electro pop. But perhaps it’s more of a straight-forward dance pop track with dark overtones?

“Running” – COOL HEAT
This is a classic, impossible to Google song-band combination, so I can’t tell you a thing about them. Some good, early Eighties synth pop DNA here. And it goes with the next song, and that was enough to include this on a short week.

“The Runners 2” – Lightning Bolt
This is a throw back to the late 90s, early 00s big beat, electronic wave that featured bands like The Prodigy.

“Nice Weather For Ducks” – Lemon Jelly
I like remembering songs I had totally forgotten, randomly. I did not hear this anywhere, or even read a reference to it. But it popped into my head one day while doing nothing related to ducks or water or thinking about fun, early 2000s tracks. Anyway, it looks like it will rain a lot here while we are gone, so perhaps we will come home to ducks swimming in the retention area in our front yard.

“Summertime Girls” – Y&T
They don’t make videos like this anymore.

  1. Yes, I know the album is titled Summerteeth and the song “Summer Teeth.” Settle down.  ↩
