Friday Playlist

“All The Beauty” – Pete Yorn
I like it better when Yorn makes B+ versions of his best songs than when he goes off on odd tangents. This is one of those good ones.

“MMA” Hannah Cole
When I read that Cole was based in Nashville, I was expecting something that was softer and gentler, closer to indie folk. I was NOT expecting a chugging, mid-90s-esque rocker like this. I’m happy to be surprised.

“My Own Beauty” – Pouty
Dude, speaking of the mid-90s. I’m not sure if the lead singer of this band sounds like someone specific, or sounds like a generic style half a dozen singers from that era had.

“Appetite” – Lifeguard
I honestly can’t believe this band is from Chicago. They sound super Australian to me.

“Nobody” – Computerwife
This reminds me of…

“Cool” – Deerhunter
…this 2011 cover of a 1979 post-punk classic.

“Sorry Mister” – Disgusting Sisters
I wish I head heard this a week earlier. It would be a nice pairing with Getdown Services’ “Cha Cha Slide.”

“All Alone Again” – Jack White
It’s taken some time, but I finally have a favorite track off the latest JW album.

“Sun Has Set” – beabadoobee
Not quite to the end of summer, but the sun is setting noticeably earlier and kids are cycling back to school. It goes too fast.

“Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)” – Simple Minds
On the one hand, I’m thankful that some AI company’s commercial gave this track a second life. On the other, I hate that I think of that commercial each time I hear this now.

“Let’s Get High” – Benjamin Diamond
A little different video this week. I’ve been doing some music catalog cleanup1 and noticed this song was greyed out on Apple Music. Somewhere, somehow, their license for it had expired. I pulled out the hard drive holding my old iTunes catalog, found the file, and imported it. Alas, I cannot share that with the rest of the world online. So I figured I’d include the video, even if it just shows the album cover.

Anyway, this lovely track is from back in 2005. The file I have was recorded off good, ol’ woxy.com. Because of how the app I used to record their stream worked, I even got about a minute of DJ chatter before it started a new file for the next track. I miss WOXY, although I’m glad The Bridge in Kansas City fills a similar role.

Also, for those of you who have followed my internet music postings for years, this appeared on transmission #11 of the Carmel Liberation Radio podcast.

1. More about that next week, maybe.
