Of course, they were probably just catering to us White Folks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/mele-kalikimaka-meaning\">Is \u2018Mele Kalikimaka\u2019 Really the Thing to Say on a Bright Hawaiian Christmas Day?<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u2019Tis the season for articles about our favorite Christmas movies.<a id=\"fnref:1\" class=\"footnote\" title=\"see footnote\" href=\"#fn:1\">[1]<\/a> I read them all because of course I do.<\/p>\n<p>I liked this one, except for the author\u2019s conclusion. I think it applies to Jean Shepherd\u2019s original essays that <em>A Christmas Story<\/em> was based on. But the movie very much softened those rough, cynical edges away. The final ten minutes of the movie are filled with joy and reinforce the myth of the perfect Christmas morning.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Most other Christmas movies reserve at least a little warmth for the holiday \u2014 some treacly message about the warm glow of family, the joy of community, and all that hokum. Brian Phillips did a pretty good job finding that middle point in his match summary.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s a story that feels lifted from a children\u2019s book, a story unblemished by the disappointments and compromises and hypocrisies inescapable in adult life. This is, in a way, the essence of sport\u2019s appeal to us.
