{"id":1390,"date":"2008-12-15T23:49:10","date_gmt":"2008-12-15T23:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/wordpress\/?p=1390"},"modified":"2024-09-25T19:01:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T23:01:19","slug":"favorite-songs-of-2008","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dsnotebook.me\/index.php\/2008\/12\/15\/favorite-songs-of-2008\/","title":{"rendered":"Favorite Songs Of 2008"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, it&#8217;s time for my annual listing of the songs that moved me and\/or stuck with me the most this year. \u00a0Enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Honorable Mention<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuildings &amp; Mountains\u201d &#8211; The Republic Tigers.\u00a0 A lovely song by a fine band from Kansas City.\u00a0 This sounds like a warm, early summer afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthern Lights\u201d &#8211; Science For Girls w\/Boots Ottestad.\u00a0 Mellow brilliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGot It Bad\u201d &#8211; The Broken West.\u00a0 Not enough people use the Minneapolis drum sound from 1985 these days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfanity Prayers\u201d &#8211; Beck.\u00a0 Beck takes Radiohead\u2019s sound and does quite nicely with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheap And Cheerful\u201d &#8211; The Kills.\u00a0 Perhaps the catchiest song of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuno\u201d &#8211; Tokyo Police Club.\u00a0 You can\u2019t go wrong with taking the early U2 sound and updating it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMolten\u201d &#8211; Sky Larkin.\u00a0 Recalling that era when there were a number of kick ass British bands fronted by women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Not Gonna Teach your Boyfriend How To Dance With You\u201d &#8211; Black Kids.\u00a0 Try to listen to this and not smile.\u00a0 I double-dog dare you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight Hand On My Heart\u201d &#8211; The Whigs.\u00a0 Biggest rocker of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bones Of You\u201d &#8211; Elbow.\u00a0 A band that should get a lot more attention.<\/p>\n<p>10 &#8211; \u201cTime To Pretend\u201d &#8211; MGMT.\u00a0 A fine take on one of the staples of rock: singing about the excesses that come with stardom.<\/p>\n<p>9 &#8211; \u201cShove It\u201d &#8211; Santogold.\u00a0 One of the most interesting artists of the year, this song brings together all kinds of influences into one undeniable sound.<\/p>\n<p>8 &#8211; \u201cHalfway Home\u201d &#8211; TV On The radio.\u00a0 Another band that takes pieces of different influeces and molds them into something fresh and unique.<\/p>\n<p>7 &#8211; \u201cLord, I\u2019m Discouraged\u201d &#8211; The Hold Steady.\u00a0 This song stuck with me because it varies from their traditional sound.\u00a0 Bleak and heartbreaking.\u00a0 Oh, and an epic guitar solo straight out of the 80s.<\/p>\n<p>6 &#8211; \u201cBixby Canyon Bridge\u201d &#8211; Death Cab For Cutie.\u00a0 Who would have guessed that a \u201cthoughtful\u201d band would rock so well?<\/p>\n<p>5 &#8211; \u201cPlasticities\u201d &#8211; Andrew Bird.\u00a0 Thanks to my kids, and Noggin\u2019s Jack\u2019s Big Music Show, for introducing me to this amazing artist.<\/p>\n<p>4 &#8211; \u201cI\u2019m Amazed\u201d &#8211; My Morning Jacket.\u00a0 This song was everywhere this summer.\u00a0 With good reason.<\/p>\n<p>3 &#8211; \u201cGoing On\u201d &#8211; Gnarls Barkley.\u00a0 Proving they\u2019re neither one hit wonders nor a novelty act that can be easily dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8211; \u201cOld Enough\u201d &#8211; The Raconteurs.\u00a0 Jack White and Brendan Benson lived up to all the hype on the Raconteurs\u2019 second album.<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8211; \u201cThe Modern Leper\u201d &#8211; Frightened Rabbit.\u00a0 I could have picked one of several songs from The Midnight Organ Fight, Frightened Rabbit\u2019s phenomenal second album.\u00a0 The disk as a whole is a perfect use of lyrics and music to share a point of view: a man destroyed by the end of a relationship.\u00a0 We hear his anger, his disbelief, his loss of self-esteem, his willingness to sacrifice his pride to reclaim the relationship, and ultimately his need to reform his identity as Me after We disappears.\u00a0 I selected this stunning disk-opener as my favorite song of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, it&#8217;s time for my annual listing of the songs that moved me and\/or stuck with me the most this year. \u00a0Enjoy.
