We have a couple house visitors and it\u2019s been a busy week, so less time to stock this up over the past few days.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Friday Playlist 9\/19\/25\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/1sYqXGH4mDSfdLFuWle5oI?si=1cd65398d8b04d95&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeptember\u201d &#8211; Earth, Wind, &amp; Fire<br \/>\nIt\u2019s that time of year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChange My Mind\u201d &#8211; Phantastic Ferniture<br \/>\nBefore she struck out on her own, Julia Jacklin had a band with some friends. Their last album came out in 2018. This week they released two new songs. No word on if a proper album will come out, but this track smokes (the other isn\u2019t too bad, either) and went straight into my working list of favorite songs of the year, so hopefully we\u2019ll hear more from JJ and her crew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cF*****g \u2019n\u2019 Rollin\u201d &#8211; Phantastic Ferniture<br \/>\nMight as well throw one of their OG tracks at you, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoseph\u201d &#8211; Bab Bad Hats &amp; Ratboys<br \/>\nI\u2019ve never heard of Bad Bad Hats, but apparently they are kind of the Ratboys of Minneapolis? Their debut album came out a decade ago and made enough of an impact on other artists that they\u2019ve put together a cover version. This is Ratboys\u2019 contribution, which sounds like it could easily be one of their songs. Ratboys are in the studio working on their next album, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweet Nothing\u201d &#8211; Saintseneca<br \/>\nThis track seemed like a nice transition from the last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWind Chime\u201d &#8211; The Berries<br \/>\nI shared the first single off The Berries\u2019 debut album a month or so ago. The album has been released, and it a wonderful set of songs that all sit in similar sonic territory, perfect for fall. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeeping Sky\u201d &#8211; Pictureplane<br \/>\nA properly dark song for our nights to get longer than our days starting this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeaven\u2019s On Fire\u201d &#8211; The Radio Dept.<br \/>\nEverything is on fire, why should heaven be any different?<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Son Volt - &quot;Drown&quot; from Conan O&#039;Brien - April 4, 1996\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ongmqrbT8OU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrown\u201d &#8211; Son Volt<br \/>\nWe just hit the 30th anniversary of the release of Son Volt\u2019s debut album, <em>Trace<\/em>. One of the most unexpectedly delightful albums of my life. I was not aware of Uncle Tupelo\u2019s music when they were a working band. From what I knew of their sound, I wasn\u2019t going to be into either of these new bands &#8211; Son Volt and Wilco &#8211; that were set to emerge from its ashes in 1995. Wilco\u2019s \u201cBox Full Of Letters\u201d was a wonderful song, full of wistful reflections on a relationship (or band) that had dissolved. But \u201cDrown\u201d blew me away, with its big guitars and Jar Farrar\u2019s unforgettable voice. <\/p>\n<p>Still, I did not expect to like their album. For some reason I picked it up and despite much of it drifting into the Tupelo <em>No Depression<\/em> sound, I loved it. It is one of a handful of albums I try to listen to, front-to-back, once a year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stevenhyden.substack.com\/p\/the-quiet-legacy-of-son-volts-trace\">Steven Hyden wrote a great remembrance of the album to honor its anniversary<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s list might be a teensy bit leaner than normal.
