Weather is terrible. No football. Still, A LOT of basketball to get caught up on, at least from the past week.

HS Hoops

L remained out for the past week. It seems like she’s getting better but we’ll see how school goes today and then her follow up with sports medicine goes tomorrow.

Because of the weather we fluctuated last week between having three games and none. And then various combinations in between. Eventually we played all three but it was a battle to get that done. Stupid winter.

Wednesday, after a day’s postponement, we went up to Carmel. That team seems cursed the past few years with tons of injuries. A year ago an injury plagued, mediocre Carmel team played terrible for 29 minutes then great for the final three and beat us by three. Almost the same thing happened this year. We opened up with a 12–2 run, Carmel changed their defense, we lost all our momentum and aggressiveness, and they played a great last three minutes to beat us by six. Dumb game.

Friday night we played Northview, who we beat a year ago in regionals. Friday we got a lead but could never fully put NV away. The lead bounced between 3–8 most of the night before we wore them down and won by 13. Also similar to last year’s game.

Finally, Saturday was senior day and we took on HN, where our coach went to school 30 years ago. They were not very good, at least from a record standpoint, but made us sweat for a while before we took control in the second half and won by 25.

The highlight, or lowlight, was another one of our players getting a cheap shot without the referees calling anything. This one was to the stomach rather than the head like L. And unlike L, this time our girl, as she was doubled over and in tears, complained to the referee. She was awarded a technical foul for her complaint. The gym was mega quiet Saturday and we heard what she said, which did not warrant a T. Although she really should have been smarter about saying anything directly to him. We had very cranky refs in both weekend games. It must be the weather. Hopefully that will pass before the tournament games begin.

Two straight wins to end the season pushed the Irish’s record to 17–6, the most regular wins since the 2004–05 season. Now the girls just need to be healthy and mentally correct for the most important part of the year. We enter the tournament ranked #8 in 3A, #38 overall in the computer ratings, having played the 28th toughest schedule in the state. Seven of the top 10 3A teams are in our half of the bracket. If we are fortunate enough to survive sectionals, this year our regional matchup will be against the #3 team that knocked us out of last year’s tournament.

We beat the #2 team over the summer. We beat the #6 team in November. If we play our best, we can beat anyone in the bracket. Hopefully our girls are ready for it.

Jayhawk Talk

OH MY GOD, IT WAS HAPPENING!!!

ESPN GameDay was in town. It was the 1000th game in Allen Fieldhouse history. The stands were filled with KU legends who had returned for the event. There were also 30-some NBA scouts and executives in town to watch Darryn Peterson and AJ Dybansta play each other for the only time in the regular season. And KU was absolutely destroying #13 BYU when, late in the first half, Peterson decided to deliver on all his hype and detonate the Cougars.

I yelled. Loudly.

A dunk that will be part of KU’s pregame hype video until the end of time.

KU went into halftime up 20 and life was perfect.

Then the reality of the ’25–26 Jayhawks just had to present itself again.

After scoring 18 in the first half, Peterson did not add another bucket. He went to the bench with over 15 minutes left and never returned. The mysterious “cramping” issues, apparently. At this point it’s not worth speculating the why or how or whatever of it all.

Elmarko Jackson had tweaked an ankle or knee in the first half, so other than a couple minutes from Jayden Dawson, KU played the entire second half with the same five players. They weathered a couple early BYU runs but were falling apart before our eyes in the last 10 minutes.

Fortunately KU made just enough plays, especially Melvin Council Jr, and escaped with an eight-point win.

Bryson Tiller has been fantastic the last two games. It seems like he’s finally settling in and understanding his role. Saturday it really paid off, with early points inside, where Bill Self wants him, generating open looks outside, where Tiller wants to be. He hit four straight 3s at one point, and ended the game as KU’s leading scorer.

BYU would have made a run regardless, but KU’s players being absolutely gassed by playing without subs didn’t help. The offense bogged down late, something Peterson surely would have helped with.

But a win is a win in the Big 12, especially on a classic Allen Fieldhouse day like that.

KU gets to fly to Lubbock to face an angry Texas Tech team tonight. Who knows if DP plays, or how much. Who knows how much energy the rest of the team has. This game was chalked up as an L already, so just get through it and be ready for Utah next weekend.

Weather

The beauty of having our new home gym is that I really don’t have to leave the house for anything other than basketball or grocery shopping if I don’t have to. That was definitely the case last week.

Sunday I went out to lunch with a friend. The sun was out and when we got to the barbecue place we had picked, we had a short walk to the door. I commented about how nice and warm it felt, then laughed when I checked and saw it was still just 21°. Bright sun plus no wind can feel very good after 10 straight days with windchills around zero.

It looks like temps will moderate a bit over the next week. It might even be above freezing Friday. However, I was reading a proper weather post last night and it suggested another wave of brutal cold is in store for sometime next week. Lovely.

At least the Winter Olympics are about to start so I’ll have something to keep myself occupied as I remain indoors.

We’ve reached the part of the year when our weekends get kind of boring.
