No kid sports. The sports I write about most are out-of-season. I’m waiting for a couple players to make their final decisions on where they play next year before diving into the KU basketball situation. I doubt you want to hear about our dinner with friends Saturday, or how S and I watched five episodes of The Pitt over the weekend.

Hey, the Royals swept the Angels, coming from six runs down and dodging bad weather to get the final win yesterday! As I’ve documented, though, I’m out on baseball at the moment.

I watched plenty of NBA playoff action during the day both Saturday and Sunday. I would not say I am locked in enough, though, to break those down. Sure would be cool if the Pacers hadn’t gone through a gap year and were still playing.

Oh, I guess a couple kind of important things happened this weekend.

Friday afternoon we had a series of showers move through, our first big rain in weeks, so much needed. It looked like there was one more round to push through then things would start clearing out for the evening. The 4:00 weather even said that last line would just be more showers.

Then, suddenly, right before 5:00 my phone started screaming at me that there was a Destructive Severe Thunderstorm warning for Marion County, with 80 MPH winds heading our way.

WTF???

I turned on the TV and saw that line of showers had suddenly blown up into something dangerous. My phone started screaming again, this time indicating a Tornado Warning for Marion County. I ran upstairs to get L, texted S to stay at work, and headed to the basement.

We were super lucky. The worst of the storm stayed about a mile south of our house. The tornado was just radar indicated, never spotted. But there were plenty of locations between the airport and downtown that had gusts over 70 MPH. We just had one crash of thunder and a couple quick gusts before a final downpour at our house.

By the time the storm hit S’s office, it had eased up quite a bit. There was like a 30 minute stretch where it exploded into a monster, then quickly calmed down. Crazy.

Not as crazy as what happened in Bloomington Saturday night/Sunday morning. I woke Sunday to a series of texts from IU that kids needed to shelter in place because of gun shots fired just off campus. My phone is muted to all but family messages at night, so I missed them when they came in. Which is probably for the best.

C was out of her dorm, but fortunately just in another dorm, well away from the ruckus. She Ubered home safely.

Sounds like there was a massive crowd of over 3000 people on the main drag downtown. There was some shoving that turned into multiple people pulling and firing guns. There were injuries but no deaths, thank goodness. And no one involved, last I heard, was an IU student even though they were all between 18 and 22. Weird.

I have a lot of other parents of college students amongst my most loyal readers and I’m sure most of you have gotten similar messages. There was a shooting near campus C’s first weekend in B-town. Same with M her first weekend at UC. I try not to think about it too much as there’s nothing I can do about it. Honestly, every time you leave the house you have a chance of driving/walking into something that has nothing to do with you that involves a gun. Hell, we’ve had shots fired outside our house and a murder with a gun less than a mile away. I just hope that the odds remain in my girls’ favor and they are never close enough to where the shooting is taking place that they are directly affected.

I guess I did have some things to write about from the weekend.

It has been weird getting to Monday mornings lately and, more often than not, struggling to find things to write about.
