Hell yeah! It continues on the subtler and more melodic path their last album took them down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThings Take Time\u201d &#8211; Gang of Youths<br>New music from Gang of Youths? Oh hell yeah! A definite change in direction, although they have never been afraid to surprise us by zigging. Not as impactful as the lead single off their last album, which landed at <a href=\"https:\/\/dsnotebook.me\/index.php\/2021\/12\/16\/favorite-songs-of-2021\/\">#3 on that year\u2019s final list<\/a>. No dates yet but I\u2019m assuming this means a new album is not too far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cbaby\u201d &#8211; Gabriel Jacoby<br>It looks like I played another Jacoby song last fall and compared his voice to Prince, DeAngelo, and Sly Stallone. (All RIP). This song came out at the same time and somehow I just heard it. Those comparisons remain apt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan\u2019t Get Over Losing You\u201d &#8211; The Avalanches featuring Portraits of Tracy<br>The Avalanches rarely miss. Of course, they also take exceptionally long breaks between releasing new music, which helps with their batting average. The cover of their new album has <a href=\"https:\/\/stereogum.com\/2507521\/the-avalanches-announce-new-album-no-bad-memories-hear-cant-get-over-losing-you-feat-portraits-of-tracy\/music\">a humanized iPod and floppy disk with their arms around each other<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaven\u2019t Lived It Yet\u201d &#8211; The Drin<br>I read one critic describe this Cincinnati band as being a modern version of The Beta Band. I hear that, although I also hear a lot of Brian Jonestown Massacre. So let\u2019s call them a super druggy Beta Band?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDry The Rain\u201d &#8211; The Beta Band<br>Hell, it\u2019s a light musical week, might as well get nutty. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/I_OMT9lOZo4?si=xX_a05L26YpCE9-z\">go buy a copy of TBB\u2019s <em>The Three E.P.\u2019s<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnemone\u201d &#8211; The Brian Jonestown Massacre<br>One of Anthony Bourdain\u2019s favorite songs. Obviously from his heroin years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMartini Me Fatso\u201d &#8211; Matt Berninger<br>Getting back to Cincy, Berninger always sounds way more fun when he\u2019s working on his own or on a side project than he does in The National.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Bjorn and John<br>PB&amp;J\u2019s legendary <em>Writer\u2019s Block<\/em> came out 20 years ago last week. Chris Deville had a predictably great <a href=\"https:\/\/stereogum.com\/2507971\/writers-block-turns-20\/reviews\/the-anniversary\">retrospective of it at Stereogum<\/a>. There\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OIRE6iw-ws4?si=lNxbnl-y8WqUzz3V\">an obvious song<\/a> that I could have played to honor it. I honestly thought Frank Beard was a stage name but that was actually his given name, which makes that note even better!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLegs\u201d and \u201cSleeping Bag\u201d were their biggest hits, each reaching #8, but this was always my favorite ZZ song. And it kicked off their run of great videos.
