{"id":2998,"date":"2013-12-12T17:32:57","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T21:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dsnotebook.me\/?p=2998"},"modified":"2024-09-08T22:53:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-09T02:53:19","slug":"holiday-tunes-links","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dsnotebook.me\/index.php\/2013\/12\/12\/holiday-tunes-links\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday Tunes Links"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple articles about Christmas music to share.<\/p>\n<p>First, the Legend himself, Darryl McDaniels, aka DMC, talks about the surprising RUN-DMC holiday classic, \u201cChristmas In Hollis.\u201d I say surprising because an awful lot of people scoffed when it appeared on the first <em>A Very Special Christmas<\/em> album next to songs by Madonna, Springsteen, Mellencamp, U2, and Whitney. \u201cThat\u2019s not Christmas music!\u201d Au contraire!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  And I think the importance of food is a big part of the reason why that song was able to touch so many people\u2014Asian people; Hispanic people; Italian people; Catholics and Buddhists and Muslims. People could relate to that video, because what do you do during holidays and celebratory times? You sit down with your family and share that special meal. So not only does that record touch black people in the hood. It touches Jewish people, German people. It touches people all over the world.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/we-talk-run-dmcs-christmas-in-hollis-with-dmc-hims-200603\">Mom\u2019s Cookin\u2019 Chicken and Collard Greens<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Second, why are there no new classic songs? In the last 30 years there have been what, three new classics? \u201cChristmas In Hollis,\u201d \u201cDo They Know It\u2019s Christmas,\u201d and \u201cAll I Want For Christmas Is You.\u201d At Salon, Chris Klimen argues that\u2019s another consequence of the digital music revolution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  It\u2019s a shame that A Mary Christmas, like an increasing number of holiday albums, doesn\u2019t bother to submit any new songs for our consideration. Since consumers can simply cherry-pick the songs they want, why make the effort?\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I do agree that Kelly Clarkson\u2019s \u201cUnderneath the Tree\u201d is solid. Good enough to enter the canon? I guess we\u2019ll see if anyone remembers it in five years.<\/p>\n<p>I also think part of the problem is some of the better recent songs are not necessarily safe for radio. The Pogues\u2019 \u201cFairytale Of New York\u201d is an all-time great holiday song. But you don\u2019t want to be playing it between songs about the baby Jesus.
