{"id":5669,"date":"2016-01-11T12:09:47","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T16:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dsnotebook.me\/?p=5669"},"modified":"2024-09-05T21:59:18","modified_gmt":"2024-09-06T01:59:18","slug":"monday-vid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dsnotebook.me\/index.php\/2016\/01\/11\/monday-vid\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Vid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Among the various Breaking News bulletins on my phone when I woke this morning was the notification of David Bowie\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>I think I\u2019m like a lot of people of my generation: not a huge Bowie fan &#8211; I really didn\u2019t know who he was until his 1983 album <em>Let\u2019s Dance<\/em>, which was the poppiest, most mainstream of his career &#8211; but I certainly recognized the impact he had on music. I like his bigger hits,<a href=\"#fn-1\" id=\"fnref-1\" title=\"see footnote\" class=\"footnote\">[1]<\/a> but much of his arty work is lost on me.<\/p>\n<p>For the post-Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who era, he set the model that artists can be whatever they want, whenever they want. It\u2019s a little amazing how many bands, many of whom made music nothing like Bowie\u2019s, cite him as an influence. Not many people sounded like Bowie. But tons of bands over the last 40 years followed his path one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>When I hit shuffle on the iPad this morning, this was the third or fourth song that came up. It\u2019s a song written by Bowie but first recorded by British band Mott the Hoople. It was a huge hit for them in Britain in 1972, and often considered the anthem of the 70s glam rock movement.
